Registry of Pioneer Families of Walker County

     The County of Walker is celebrating the year 2000. In honor of this event, the Walker County Genealogical Society is offering a Commemorative Certificate to eligible persons. Anyone directly descended from an early Walker County settler is eligible to apply for one of these recognitions. The data furnished by applicants as proof of lineage will be a valuable addition to the history of Walker County and will become a part of the Huntsville Public Library - Genealogical/Local History/Texana Room collection.


FIRST FAMILIES OF WALKER COUNTY CERTIFICATE

     To receive the "First Families of Walker County Certificate", the applicant must directly descend from an ancestor who settled within the boundaries of Walker County prior to October 5, 1850 (end of census year).


CENTURY FAMILIES OF WALKER COUNTY CERTIFICATE

     To receive the "Century Families of Walker County Certificate", the applicant must directly descend from an ancestor who settled within the boundaries of Walker County prior to June 29, 1900 (end of census year).


ELIGIBILITY

     The applicant must directly descend from an ancestor who settled within the boundaries of Walker County. The applicant must be able to prove descent from the ancestor (male or female) by an official record, or records, for each generation, including proof for the applicant. Current county residency is not a requirement.

INSTRUCTIONS

     Complete, to the best of your ability, the Registry Line of Descent Form, Proof of Descent Form, and the Walker County Pioneer Registry Application. Type or Print in Black Ink. If you have more than one ancestor, please complete a separate application for each ancestor. Only one ancestor will be inscribed on the certificate.

PROOFS

     To insure that the certificate is the result of credible genealogical research, the following PRIMARY SOURCES are acceptable: (DO NOT SEND ORIGINALS, copies only). Vital records (birth, death, marriage certificates); Probate Records; Tax Records; All Census Records; Military Records; Church; Mortuary; Cemetery; Court Records; Bible Records; Tombstone Inscriptions; Obituaries; and, Family Histories, if they are well documented. Please submit these proofs on 8.5" X 11" pages. Preponderance of proof will prevail.

SUBMITTED MATERIALS

     All applications and proofs become the property of Walker County Genealogical Society, Huntsville, Texas. They will not be returned, but will become a part of the Huntsville Public Library - Genealogical/Local History/Texana Collection and will be placed in a vertical file. Eligibility shall be determined by a committee of the Walker County Genealogical Society. The committee's decision shall be final. Incorrect or incomplete applications will be returned for corrections or additions and the applicant will be encouraged to resubmit.


HOW TO REGISTER

     Send a long SASE (self addressed stamped envelope) for application forms to address below. Applications will also be at the Huntsville Public Library; Office of County Clerk, Walker County Courthouse; Huntsville Chamber of Commerce Office; and, Samuel Walker Houston Cultural Center for local pick up.      Mail completed application and photocopied proof of descent in a 9"X12" manila envelope, NOT FOLDED, along with a check for $15.00 for each ancestor, payable to: Walker County Genealogical Society, and mail to:
